Our Inspiration: Who Is My Neighbor?

The Quest

An expert in the law approached Jesus, seeking to test Him. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus replied, “What is written in the law? How do you interpret it?” The expert answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus affirmed, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”

A Call to Love and Compassion

However, wanting to justify himself, the expert pressed further, “And who is my neighbor?” In response, Jesus shared the story of a man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho who was attacked by robbers. Despite the situation, both a priest and a Levite passed by without offering help. Yet a Samaritan, moved by compassion, stopped to bandage the man's wounds, took him to an inn, and cared for him.

The Challenge to Act

Jesus concluded with a poignant question: “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” The expert replied, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus then said, “Go and do likewise.”
